Frequently Asked Questions

The burial fee covers the purchase of the burial plot, hand-dug grave preparation, and the ongoing care and management of the natural burial ground.

Yes. Reduced fees are available for children under 18 and infants. Please refer to the funeral charges table above for current prices.

Your funeral director will advise you of any additional costs, such as a biodegradable coffin or shroud, celebrant fees, flowers or funeral arrangements. These are separate from the burial plot fee. There is no legal requirement to use a funeral director, although many families find their support helpful. If you would prefer to take a more hands-on approach, please speak to our Burials Team. We specialise in supporting and guiding families who wish to be directly involved in the burial arrangements and ceremony. We hold only one funeral each day, giving families the time and space they need to say goodbye without feeling rushed.

All surplus income is donated to the Earthworks Trust, supporting environmental education and conservation work at The Sustainability Centre.

Please contact the South Downs Natural Burial Site office by phone 01730 823425 or email burials@sustainability-centre.org to discuss availability, fees or to arrange an appointment.

No. Burial plots are arranged at the time of need by the next of kin, or family members. Please contact the Burial Site Manager to discuss your requirements.

A double depth plot allows two burials to take place in the same grave. The second burial incurs an interment fee at the time it takes place.

Payment is often made through ‘disbursements’. This is when the funeral director pays the burial site, and the family are then presented with the invoice for both funeral director and cemetery costs. However, we are also happy to invoice the family directly for our costs – in this case payments can be made by cheque (payable to South Downs Natural Burial Site) or by bank transfer. Payment details will be provided when arrangements are made. We only invoice on the day, or soon after the burial has taken place. We ask for no deposit or advance payment.

Yes. You are welcome to visit the burial ground at any time. If you would like to discuss arrangements with a member of staff, you must book an appointment in advance, to avoid a wasted journey.
