Yes. Fresh cut flowers are welcome and may be placed directly on the grave.
Yes. Native wildflowers that are suitable for the woodland environment are welcome. If you are unsure whether a plant is appropriate, please contact the Burial Site Manager before planting. There is a list of permissible species on our website.
No. Individual trees cannot be planted on graves, as the woodland is managed according to a long-term conservation plan. Any tree planting is carefully planned and carried out by the Burial Site team.
No. Artificial flowers are not permitted as they do not biodegrade and are not in keeping with the natural ethos of the burial ground.
No. Potted plants and containers are not allowed, as they detract from the natural woodland landscape.
The South Downs Natural Burial Site is managed to encourage biodiversity and preserve its woodland habitat. These guidelines help protect native wildlife, maintain the natural landscape and ensure the site remains a peaceful place of remembrance for generations to come.
Yes. Please ensure flowers are free from plastic wrapping, ribbons, cellophane, wire and floral foam (Oasis). Only natural, biodegradable materials should be brought into the burial ground.
Yes. Suitable native bulbs may be planted, provided they are in keeping with the natural woodland setting. There is a list of permissible species on our website.
No. Shrubs, ornamental plants and invasive species are not permitted, as they can affect the natural balance of the woodland.
No. To preserve the peaceful, natural appearance of the burial ground, ornaments, statues, wind chimes, lanterns, balloons, solar lights and other decorative items are not permitted.
Staff may remove flowers once they have naturally faded or deteriorated to help maintain the beauty of the burial ground, and to allow natural light to help regeneration of flora.
