As the burial ground is outdoors, we recommend dressing appropriately for the weather and wearing sturdy footwear such as walking boots or wellington boots, particularly during wet weather.
On funeral days, signs will direct you to the burial site car park. If additional parking is needed, overspill parking is available in the Visitor Car Park, which is also clearly signposted. Staff will be stationed at the front gate to welcome you and direct you to the appropriate meeting point.
Yes. A vehicle is available to transport guests who are unable to walk to the burial site. If this is required, please let us know in advance where possible.
Yes. Children are welcome but must be supervised by a responsible adult at all times.
No. To preserve the natural beauty of the woodland, permanent headstones, grave markers and memorials are not permitted.
No. Graves should not be outlined or decorated with wooden logs, flints, chalk or other materials, as this helps maintain the natural appearance of the burial ground.
Yes. You are welcome to visit the Natural Burial Site at any time. If you wish to meet with a member of staff or arrange a burial, please book an appointment in advance by calling or emailing burials@sustainability-centre.org
Services may be held in the Woodland Hall (a sheltered outdoor space), or at the graveside within the woodland, depending on the wishes of the family.
Following the ceremony, the coffin is respectfully carried to the graveside on a hand bier or horse-drawn bier, with mourners following on foot.
Yes. If the family wishes, flowers may be placed at the graveside. Please ensure they do not contain cellophane, ribbons, floral foam (Oasis) or any non-biodegradable materials.
Yes. Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a short lead at all times, and owners are asked to clean up after them. There is a dog waste bin near the visitors centre.
Yes. Fresh cut flowers may be left on the grave, provided they are free from plastic wrapping, ribbons, wire and floral foam.
Yes. To help protect the woodland and respect those laid to rest, please:
• Stay on designated paths where possible.
• Do not pick wildflowers or fungi.
• Supervise children at all times.
• Keep dogs on short leads.
• Leave only biodegradable flowers.
• Respect the peace and tranquillity of the site.
Do not allow children, or adults, to chalk on trees, benches etc
The burial ground includes natural woodland paths with uneven surfaces, which may become slippery in wet weather. Please take care during your visit and wear appropriate footwear.
