Nestled in the heart of the South Downs National Park, The Sustainability Centre is set within 55 acres of beautiful woodland and chalk downland. Our stunning natural surroundings inspire everything we do and serve as a daily reminder of the importance of protecting and caring for the environment.

Our mission is to educate, inspire, and empower people from all walks of life to make positive, lasting changes to the way they live, work, and connect with the world around them.

The Sustainability Centre is owned and operated by the Earthworks Trust, a registered charity established in 1995. Through the Centre, we demonstrate how sustainability can be put into practice every day by managing our land, charity, and businesses as living examples of environmentally responsible and socially conscious stewardship.

We believe sustainability is about making balanced decisions that benefit people, the planet, and the economy. By nurturing people, ideas, and innovation, we encourage practical action that creates meaningful, long-term change. In an increasingly uncertain world, we aim to offer hope, inspiration, and achievable solutions for a more sustainable future.

We welcome everyone to the Centre, from families, schools, and community groups to professionals, special interest organisations, walkers and cyclists exploring the South Downs Way, and anyone with a curiosity about sustainable living. Whether you’re here to learn, explore, relax, or be inspired, you’ll find a warm welcome and a place to connect with nature and new ideas.

Awards

We’re so proud to have won the Big Sustainability Award for our Fairshare Fund initiative, which helps make sustainability education accessible to all schools! This is a huge step forward in raising environmental awareness.

What is sustainability?

Sustainability is about caring for our planet as though we intend to leave it in better condition for future generations.

For us, sustainability is more than simply being “green.” It’s about making thoughtful choices that balance environmental responsibility, social wellbeing, and economic resilience to create a healthier, fairer future for everyone.

We are living in a time of significant global challenges—from climate change and biodiversity loss to resource depletion and social inequality. While these issues can feel overwhelming, we believe that every positive action matters. Together, we can choose to live, work, and make decisions that are kinder to people and the planet.

At the heart of sustainability are three interconnected principles:

Earth Care – Protecting and restoring nature, conserving resources, and respecting the limits of our planet.

Ethical Business – Creating fair and responsible systems that value people and the environment alongside prosperity, ensuring resources are used wisely and shared equitably.

People Care – Supporting healthy, inclusive, and resilient communities where everyone has the opportunity to thrive, now and in the future.

These three principles work together. Lasting sustainability can only be achieved when environmental, social, and economic wellbeing are considered as one.

At the Sustainability Centre, we aim to inspire curiosity, encourage learning, and empower people to make practical changes in their everyday lives. Whether those changes are large or small, each one contributes to a more sustainable future.

Change begins with awareness. It grows through action. And it can start here.
